The Research Institute for Quality of Life was established in 1990 under the aegis of the Romanian Academy and the National Institute for Economic Research. The Institute promotes the sociological approach in the area of researching Quality of Life, Poverty, Social Policy and Social Development.

Within the publications page, one can also get details about our peer-reviewed journal Calitatea Vieţii [Quality of Life], available online starting with the 1998 volume. Some other papers and books are also available for free download from the publications page.

Our staff comprises 32 researchers, 20 junior researchers and 20 research assistants and technical personnel. Most of the staff has training in sociology, but some are also trained in statistics, economics or other disciplines. Details are to be found in the staff page.

RIQL is the founder of the Romanian Social Data Archive (RODA). Most of the databases produced by the institute starting 1990 to date can be retrieved from RODA.

Beside our academic interests, we provide consultancy to various governmental, international (European Commission, World Bank, UNDP, ILO, UNESCO, UNICEF etc.), non-governmental and private entities. We developed competencies in assessing social/public policy, assessing and monitoring the social impact of various decisions and actions, providing inputs for policy making, carrying out quantitative or qualitative impact studies (surveys, case studies, focus group and in-depth interviews etc.)
